A Sustainable Colloquium

In light of this year’s theme “Organizing for a Sustainable Future”, the local organizers of the 36th EGOS Colloquium 2020 in Hamburg are committed to organizing a sustainable conference. Hamburg is a perfect place to organize a conference with low travel emissions: the University of Hamburg is located in the middle of the city, most hotels are in walking distance to venue. Furthermore, the city is easily accessible via train, and OS4future has organized joint train rides from selected local hubs; for more information, please click here.

For the Colloquium itself, we reflect on sustainability in many regards:

  • We refrain from providing bags and printed programs to all participants. Please use the EGOS App to get all necessary information and timely updates.

  • We offer vegetarian food options only for all lunches and coffee breaks to reduce CO2 emissions and food waste.

  • We follow a minimum waste policy by using re-usable dishes, glasses and cups.

  • The university purchases 100 percent renewable electricity.

  • A free public transportation ticket (HVV) is included with the Colloquium badge.

Alongside all these efforts, participants still emit greenhouse gas emissions simply by attending the Colloquium. These stem, for example, from the hotel accommodation, public transportation, food production, etc. We have developed our own tool for the EGOS Colloquium 2020 that seeks to determine all emissions caused by the attending participants. We are committed to offsetting all these emissions by using CDM and Gold Standard certified emission reductions from waste-to-energy biogas projects.

We would like to encourage all participants to offset their individual travel-related emissions in addition to supporting us in our efforts to make the 36th EGOS Colloquium 2020 in Hamburg as sustainable as possible.
