Dynamic Relationships between People as the Connecting Fabric of Organizations and Society

Call for papers:

Relationships are the fabrics which keeps social units and the entire society together and which help assure their best possible existence and development. In this sub-theme we wish to further develop this tradition of looking at organization as a set of dynamic relationships between people – a “negotiated” order - where individual intentionality and actions come to terms with the presence and activities of others and the purpose and objectives of organizations. We thus wish to focus on interactions between people, on relationships and their characteristics as well as on the processes of their emergence, change and coordination.  

We suggest that relationships between people are the site in which “dynamic structuration” occurs. We wish to explore how networks of both work- and non-work related relationships are actually formed and establishing the social fabric of organizations. Another current theme is the organization of networks, which consists of many ties with contractors, customers, stakeholders, etc. We also wish to examine how individual internal relationships relate to these external ties, how they facilitate or channel them, and in what way they are affected by them. There is also much current work on how conversation and discourse act to constitute social phenomena. Just another aspect of our sub-theme is how “talk” is implemented in the emergence of social relationships in organizations.  

We invite papers that focus on relationships and on the dynamic processes of their emergence and change both within and outside organizations, and how they relate to the accomplishment of individual and collective goals. Emphasis should be given to interactions between people (and organizations). We especially invite theoretical pieces that attempt to conceptualize organization as a system of dynamic relationships within social units and entities. Such perspectives can give a new insight into many organizational phenomena. 

Following are some questions and issues that fall within this sub-theme.

  • How do relationships keep groups and social units together to assure their existence, special characteristics, development and rational achievement of their goals?

  • How do relationships develop and change within informal and formal social units?

  • How do collective properties of groups and organizations actually emerge in the process of interactions?

  • How can the conundrum of strategic actions and social constraints be viewed within the context of dynamic interaction?

  • How can important organizational phenomena such as governance, management, leadership, organizational climate, organizational culture, trust and others be understood and explained in the light of dynamic relationships?

  • What kinds of interactions and relationships should be the object of our observation and analysis? How does their coordination occur?

  • Why is conflict an inherent part of each relationship and how does it influence the dynamics of relationship?

  • How are coordination and decision-making accomplished in the interactions of members?

  • What kinds of members’ relationships emerge to assure the benefits of supply chains, clusters, strategic alliances, and similar “networks”?

  • How can organizational learning be explained through member relationships?
