Call for Papers
PURPOSE. The "History and Organization Studies" Paper Development Workshop, offered by the EGOS Standing Working Group 08, is a pre-Colloquium activity for scholars wanting to conduct (or who are already conducting) historical research in organization studies. The workshop is targeted primarily to emerging scholars (inc. PhD students), but we are also happy to welcome more established researchers.
The workshop aims to provide insights into how to
- design and carry out historical studies of organizations or organizational fields,
- write up the findings in a concise and comprehensive manner, while preserving the richness of the data, and
- publish the resulting papers in top-level journals, which includes a round-table discussion with several editors (amongst others, Roy Suddaby and Mick Rowlinson).
The workshop takes place on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, 9:00?15:00. All participants are expected to have read the papers of their fellow session presenters and be ready to contribute to their discussion.
APPLICATION. Please submit (via the EGOS website) a single application document (.doc, .docx or .pdf file) that includes:
- On the first page: a short letter of application containing full details of name, address (postal address, phone and email), affiliation (date of PhD completion for early career scholars), a statement of why the applicant considers it valuable to attend the workshop, as well as an indication of what journal(s) the paper is likely to be submitted to;
- A full paper that you want to develop to a publishable stage.

End:? March 15, 2012, 23:59:59 CET
- The same research paper cannot be submitted both to this pre-Colloquium Paper Development Workshop and to the regular "History and Organizations: Moving Research Forward" sub-theme 08 of the main Colloquium. However, the History and Organizations sub-theme convenors may suggest that short papers submitted to them should be redirected from the sub-theme to the Paper Development Workshop.
- Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application to the workshop by the end of March 2012. Given the interactive nature of the workshop and in order to stimulate intense discussion and provide feedback on individual work, the number of participants will be limited to 15. Therefore, we advise you to register for the workshop as early as possible.
- Upon acceptance to the workshop, participants will be given the opportunity to update their paper by June 1, 2012 (fixed deadline) via the EGOS website.
- Participants are encouraged to apply also to the other pre-Colloquium activities as well as to regular EGOS Colloquium program. Please see details on the EGOS Colloquium 2012 website.
- The final workshop registration must be completed separately to the short paper submissions and registration (Colloquium fee required) for the main EGOS Colloquium.
Behlül Üsdiken?is Professor of Management and Organization at Sabanci University, Istanbul, Turkey. His publications have appeared in journals such as 'Organization Studies', 'British Journal of Management', 'Strategic Management Journal', 'Management Learning', 'Business History', 'Journal of Management Inquiry' and the 'Scandinavian Journal of Management'. He has served as co-editor of 'Organization Studies' between 1996 and 2001 and is currently European Editor of the 'Journal of Management Inquiry'.
Matthias Kipping?is Professor of Strategic Management and Chair in Business History at the Schulich School of Business, York University in Toronto, Canada. His research has focused on the development and role of the different institutions of management knowledge, namely management consulting and business education. In his publications, as well as in his teaching, he has been trying to link historical research with organizational theory. He is active in a variety of scholarly associations in both business history and management and organization studies.
Lars Engwall?is Professor of Business Administration at Uppsala University (Sweden). His research has been directed towards the development of industries and organizations as well as the creation and diffusion of management knowledge. His publications related to the sub-theme include 'Mercury Meets Minerva' (1992/2009), 'Management Consulting' (2002, ed. with Matthias Kipping) and 'The Expansion of Management Knowledge' (2002, ed. with Kerstin Sahlin-Andersson).
Kalle Pajunen?is an acting Professor of Management and Organization at the Turku School of Economics, University of Turku. His research has addressed questions related to stakeholder management, inter-organizational relationships, institutions and international business, corporate ethical activity, organizational decline and turnaround processes, relationship between individual agency and structural/ institutional determinism, and the nature of organizational mechanisms and explanation by mechanisms. His current interests include in particular institutions and international business, path-dependent processes in organizational and industry levels, and fuzzy-set research methods.
